New Video: Full Speed Session

An example of how to build quality speed sessions

Full Speed Training Session Video
Highlights from a recent session with my commentary

Welcome to the AE Golf Performance Newsletter! In this issue, I want to share a new speed training video.

As you may know, I am not only interested in the fitness and physical training side of golf performance, but also how we can combine this with effective and well-structured speed training. Golf has made a lot of strides, but I think we still

There are a ton of solid speed training products and systems on the market, and most will give you some nice gains if you stick with them. I’ve used quite a few of them myself, and continue to incorporate them as part of my speed sessions.

But I view those programs as just one piece of the puzzle. We can and should build out approaches that are more holistic in terms of not just gaining you speed, but also helping you learn to use that speed effectively on the course. Importantly, I want to help golfers gain speed alongside the movement patterns and skill to make the best use of it, and to avoid injury or other unwanted side effects in the process.

Keep an eye out for some educational resources and programs on this very concept in the near future! But in the meantime, feel free to check out a few of my recent social media posts on the topic:

I have designed dozens of different sessions, which I can use or program depending on the individual, the goal of the session, and what makes sense within the context of the golfer’s preparation and schedule at that time.

Here is one such example, with an overlay of myself talking through some of the key components.

Some key components of the session:

  • Dynamic Warm-up (not shown): Series of general physical movements to get the body moving and firing. I’ll cover specifics of warm-ups for golf in other posts. But this usually involves a series of something to get heart rate up, some dynamic mobility drills, and then low-volume explosive movements of some sort.

  • Golf Warm-up: An extension of the dynamic warm-up, but with a golf swing specific focus. In this session, I included some rhythmic swings, along with motions targeting the backswing and downswing, progressively increasing speed and range of motion over time.

  • Drill Work: Emphasizing movement patterns that I hope to translate into the main session. When speed is the goal, these are often drills that promote quality movement patterns, but are not overly technical so that I can keep intensity high.

  • Ramp Up Swings: Gradually increasing speed and effort of swings until close to max speed.

  • Main Speed Session: In this case, alternating between a few Overspeed swings with high intent driver swings striking a limited flight ball.

Until next time!
